During this year of the Beijing Olympic Games, we at Bank of China Limited (BOC) are pleased to launch our first corporate social responsibility report.
China has recorded remarkable economic achievements and made significant progress in improving the living standards of its people in the recent past.BOC has also made outstanding advances during this period by following the concept of scientific development, improving its operating and management systems,and cultivating its core competencies. As we enter a new era of continuous and stable growth in our history, we are making tremendous strides forward in transforming BOC into a world-class bank.
At BOC, we are well aware that social progress is underpinned by economic and social development as well as environmental conservation. In a bid to realize the magnificent goal of constructing a harmonious society,we will concern ourselves with maintaining sustainable development for posterity and shouldering as many social responsibilities as possible while continuing to emphasize the achievements we have made.
Since the foundation of our Bank, we have taken as our mission to serve the public and benefit the citizens of China, and have made important contributions to the development of the state and society at various stages in our history. We believe it is important not only to fulfill our commitment to shareholders, but also to play a role as a responsible corporate citizen.
With priority given to the scientific development concept,we are dedicated to creating value for our customers, increasing returns for investors, and providing our employees with a favorable platform for their development. We are continuously innovating new financial products, improving our bank services, and enhancing our various business lines to bring greater value to our customers, shareholders and society.
As risk management is critical to our success as a bank, we have implemented a compliance system that enables us to adhere to international conventions on anti-money laundering and intellectual property rights protection. Furthermore, we are strengthening our risk management infrastructure and raising staff awareness at all levels so that we can operate a sound and creditworthy operation .
At the same time, we are mindful that our people are our most valuable resource and promote gender equality and non-discrimination as part of our employment policies. We not only protect the rights and interests of our staff but also encourage them to grow and develop in their careers with BOC.
We also strive to be a "green" bank, following the economic policies of the state to save resources and protect the environment.On our own initiative, we launched a green credit campaign in order to restrict or control lending to high polluting, high energy-consuming industries, while supporting new technology enterprises and environmental protection causes.
In addition to our environmental efforts, we take an active role in social welfare activities, including disaster relief, poverty alleviation and education. What's more, we work to promote greater understanding between Chinese and Western cultures, and feed back the society by various means.
We have set the "pursuing excellence" as the core value of Bank of China and have based our corporate culture on honesty and integrity, performance, accountability, creativity and harmoniousness.
In 2008, as the sole official banking partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games we will accelerate our development through our association with the Games. We will not only provide assistance to the Games but will also work harder to help create a more harmonious society and better future for all humankind.
